The Hardacre Film & Cinema Festival, Iowa's first independent competitive film festival, has two primary goals:

1. To bring a diverse selection of cutting edge independent motion pictures to our Eastern Iowa audience who otherwise would not have an opportunity to view these films.

2. To provide an intimate setting where independent filmmakers screen their works of art for an intelligent, engaged Midwestern audience. Direct interaction between artist and audience is plentiful during formal Q&A sessions and informal discussions at other times during the festival.

In 2007 the festival received nearly 200 entries from 30 states and over a dozen countries around the world, including Australia, Ghana, New Zealand, Chile, Belgium, and Japan.

Although in the past Hardacre has at times screened films that also appear at high-profile festivals such as Sundance and Cannes, our priorities are not about big names or big budgets. Films at Hardacre, above all, challenge and entertain the audience, representing the pinnacle of truly independent filmmaking.

There's a reason that Hardacre alum repeatedly submit their new films to our festival: it's an organic experience that, while it won't get you a big-time distribution deal with a major studio, it goes back to the core of motion pictures as an art form: public exhibition, subjective interpretation and personal discussion.

The historic Hardacre Theater in downtown Tipton is an art-deco masterpiece that has been in constant use as a theater since 1917. It provides an intimate setting for 300 cinephiles, casual fans and those who simply stumble in to enjoy your film.

We'll make sure that you and your film are positioned to make the best possible impact on the audience, the media and the community at large.

Entry Fees: Fees are dependant on a film’s length, if it is a student production and if certain deadlines are met. Take $5 off any submission fee if you’re an Iowa filmmaker. Make check or money order payable to the Hardacre Film & Cinema Festival. Fees may differ if submitting through Withoutabox.com. Entries must be postmarked by the stated date to qualify for that deadline. There is no limit to the number of entries. Entry fee is non-refundable. The Festival Director reserves the right to grant fee waivers for special circumstances on a case by case basis.

Preview Copies: For jury selection purposes a preview copy of your submitted film must be submitted on DVD (NTSC format only). Please make sure that DVD submissions will play back properly on a standard North American stand alone DVD player. If you would like your preview copy returned, please include a self addressed stamped mailing package. Preview disc may be duplicated by festival staff for judging purposes only. If preview disc is copy-protected, please send two copies with entry form.

Shipping: All films will be returned to sender via USPS by August 30 following the festival. If your film is to be sent to some other location, you must make arrangements IN ADVANCE with the Festival Director. If there is a need for a more immediate return please arrange with the Festival Director. If screening copy is to be forwarded to other sites or film festivals following the screening the filmmaker will be responsible for any extra shipping charges. This reimbursement must be received in advance of shipping. While all entries are treated with the utmost care Festival staff is not responsible for loss or damage to prints, discs or tapes.

Deadlines & Formats: Deadline for all entries is June 1, 2008 . Films selected for screening will be notified by July 3, 2008 with screening schedule and award winners announced shortly thereafter. Selected entries must have a 35mm print, DVCAM, MiniDV or DVD screening copy shipped to the HFCF office by July 23, 2008 . The filmmaker will be responsible for the shipping expense of sending their film to our office. We also request that a press kit accompany the screening copy – which will be used for festival programs, promotion and media outreach. Please note: foreign language films must have English subtitles or an English language audio track available.

Non Winning Entries: The HFCF will do our best to notify every filmmaker who submits a film if you are not selected for screening at the festival. If you are not notified by July 11, 2008 , it is safe to assume your work is not being shown and therefore, ipso facto, you also did not win an award. With the large number of entries we judge every year it is sometimes very difficult to notify every entrant. To help us help you, be sure your email address, telephone number or numbers and mailing address is clearly printed on the entry form.

Late Entries: Films may be accepted for late submission contingent on the number of entries already received and overall programming needs. To request a deadline extension, please contact the Festival Director.
